Windows XP Tips

1) Revert to Classic Start Menu (Top)

  1. Right click the START button.
  2. Select PROPERTIES.
  3. Select the START MENU tab.
  4. Choose CLASSIC option.
  5. You can use the  CUSTOMIZE and disable PERSONALIZED MENUS if you so desire.
  6. Click OK.

2) Remove XP Themes (Top)

  1. Hit Start Button.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select CONTROL PANEL.
  4. Double click Administration Tools
  5. Double click SERVICES.
  6. Double click on the THEMES service.
  7. Change STARTUP TYPE to DISABLED.
  8. Click STOP button.
  9. Click OK

3) Remove unnecessary Display Effects (Top)

  1. Right click MY COMPUTER on your Desktop.
  2. Select PROPERTIES.
  3. Select ADVANCED tab.
  4. Under PERFORMANCE, click the SETTINGS button.
  5. Select ADJUST FOR BEST PERFORMANCE.
  6. Click OK.

4) Disable Remote Assistance (Top)

  1. Right click MY COMPUTER on your Desktop.
  2. Select PROPERTIES.
  3. Select REMOTE tab.
  4. Uncheck the bottom box.
     

5) Disable Microsoft Firewall (Top)

  1. Right click MY NETWORK PLACES on the Desktop.
  2. Select PROPERTIES.
  3. Right click on your LAN adapter at the top of the window.
  4. Select PROPERTIES.
  5. Select ADVANCED tab.
  6. Uncheck the option under INTERNET CONNECTION FIREWALL.
  7. Click OK.

6) Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP (Top)

  1. Right click MY NETWORK PLACES on the Desktop.
  2. Select PROPERTIES.
  3. Right click on your LAN adapter at the top of the window.
  4. Select PROPERTIES.
  5. Select the GENERAL tab.
  6. Double click INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP).
  7. Click ADVANCED button at the bottom.
  8. Select the WINS tab.
  9. Select DISABLE NETBOIS OVER TCP/IP
  10. Click OK.

7) Modify bandwith  (Top)

  1. Make sure your logged on as Administrator.  Do not log on with any account that just has administrator privileges.
    To log in as Administrator:
    - Click on start->logoff->logoff
    - At the logon screen hold Ctrl+Alt+Del.
    - In the user field type 'Administrator'
    - In the password field type the password for the administrator (if you don't have one leave blank) and press OK
  2. Click on the Start button and select run.
  3. Type gpedit.msc in the text box and click OK
  4. Once the program loads, expand the Computer configuration branch.
  5. Expand the Administrative templates branch.
  6. Expand the Network branch.
  7. Highlight the QoS Packet Scheduler in left window.
  8. In right window double click the limit reservable bandwidth setting
  9. On setting tab check the enabled option.
  10. Where it says Bandwidth limit %, change it to read what ever percent you want to reserve for QoS-aware applications.
  11. Click OK and exit the group policy editor.
  12. Go to your Network connections (start->my computer->my network connection-> view network connections).
  13. Right click on your connection, choose properties then under the General or the Networking tab (where it lists your protocols) make sure QoS packet scheduler is enabled.
  14. Now just reboot your computer and you are all done.

8) Disable Automatic updates (Top)

  1. Right click MY COMPUTER on your Desktop.
  2. Select PROPERTIES.
  3. Select AUTOMATIC UPDATES tab.
  4. Select TURN OFF AUTOMATIC UPDATES.
  5. Click OK.

9) Change System Restore Settings (Top)

  1. Right click MY COMPUTER on your Desktop.
  2. Select PROPERTIES.
  3. Select SYSTEM RESTORE tab.
  4. Change settings according to your desires.
  5. Hit OK.

10) Disable Error Reporting (Top)

  1. Right click MY COMPUTER on your Desktop.
  2. Select PROPERTIES.
  3. Select ADVANCED tab.
  4. Click ERROR REPORTING.
  5. Select your options.
  6. Click OK, Click OK.

11) Disable Windows Picture and Fax Viewer  (Top)

  1. a. Hit the Start button.
  2. Select RUN.
  3. Enter the following text: (cut and paste for accuracy)

          regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll

  1. Click OK.

12) Disable ZIP FOLDERS  (Top)

  1. Hit the Start button.

  2. Select RUN.

  3. Enter the following text: (cut and paste for accuracy)

          regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll

  1. Click OK.

13) Disable WebPopUps  (Top)

  1. Right click on MY COMPUTER.
  2. Select MANAGE.
  3. Select SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS
  4. Double Click SERVICES.
  5. Find MESSENGER service
  6. Right Click MESSENGER and select PROPERTIES.
  7. Hit STOP.
  8. Select DISABLED from START TYPE menu.
  9. Hit OK.
